With the startup late last year of the 3.2-MW demonstration facility at the Department of Energy's Energy Technology Engineering Center (ETEC) at Canoga Park, CA the innovative Kalina cycle has moved from the realm of theory to practice. The demonstration plant is operating to test innovative ammonia-water based bottoming cycle design that promises 25% better thermal efficiency than the best steam system - and 10% to 15% greater power output. The new facility, installed adjacent to and operated for DOE by the Rocketdyne Division of Rockwell International, is designed to prove out the heart of the Kalina cycle system, and has already generated promising results, according to project engineers.
