Title: Tar sands development by ENPEX

Conference · · Proc., Intersoc. Energy Convers. Eng. Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5569376

Over the past two years ENPEX has been involved in a project to develop heavy tar sands deposit in South Texas. Economic feasibility of the project is mainly influenced by two factors: Thermal efficiency of the production technique; and Market value of the recovered bitumen. Steam flooding promises high thermal efficiency and ENPEX's evaluation of tar upgrading processes shows that maximizing the liquid components would have the best chance for achieving best market values for the recovered tar sands bitumen which has a very high sulfur and asphaltene content. An integrated production and upgrading scheme is proposed based on this concept.
