Title: Carbon dioxide increase and human health: data and research requirements for determining consequences (including a bibliography for additional reading)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5564643

The purpose of this study was to determine the data and information needed to eventually define the consequences on human health of elevated CO/sub 2/. To attain this purpose, current knowledge of the effects of climate and weather on human health was reviewed. An increase in atmospheric CO/sub 2/ is predicted to have several effects which may have an influence, directly and indirectly, on human health. These include climate change, changes in vegetation (due to changes in fertilization and water-use efficiency of plants), changes in ocean chemistry (due to increases in dissolved CO/sub 2/), and possibly slight changes in human biochemistry and physiology (due to breathing air with elevated concentrations of CO/sub 2/). This report describes some of the ways that climate and weather influence human health, some of the modifying factors, and the information and data needed to initiate studies of the possible consequences of elevated atmospheric CO/sub 2/ on human health.
