Rainbow project may hit 96% recovery
A miscible operation combines pressure maintenance, condensate blanket, and gravity flow to sweep Rainbow A's Keg River reef pool clean. Banff Oil Ltd. plans to ultimately involve 10 reservoirs in the novel scheme. The drive has been developed to sweep an additional 100 million bbl oil from Canada's big Rainbow Lake field. Unlike most miscible projects, which have driven horizontally, Banff has started in the attic of A pool's pinnacle-reef structure and is sweeping toward the basement. The company expects recovery percentages to be spectacular--96% according to its application filed with the Alberta Oil and Gas Conservation Board. Recovery percentages in this range are not new to Canada's pinnacle- reef country, however. Imperial Oil is reported on its way to capturing 95% of the oil in Golden Spike South D-3A pool with a similar vertical-displacement miscible flood. Recovery potential at Rainbow also depends partly on disposition of Banff's application for permission to conduct a sequential production scheme involving, in one way or another, 10 Rainbow pools.
