Scattering of low-energy antiprotons by nuclei
We show that the mechanism for the interaction of low-energy antiprotons (p-bar) with nuclei is given by the Glauber model with allowance for Coulomb scattering. We calculated the differential cross sections for p-bar/sup 12/C elastic and inelastic scattering (with excitation of the 2/sup +/ (4.44 MeV) level of the residual nucleus) as well as for p-bar/sup 40/Ca and p-bar/sup 208/Pb elastic scattering at incident-particle energies of 46.8 and 180 MeV, without using free parameters. The results turn out to be in good agreement with the data from the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR). We also determined the ratio of the real to the imaginary parts of the elementary p-barN amplitude at these energies; these results are also in good agreement with the LEAR data on p-barp scattering.
