Pathology standards for coal workers' pneumoconiosis
Anatomic criteria for the recognition and assessment of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) were recommended to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health by a committee of the College of American Pathologists. Collections of lungs with CWP were reviewed and the characteristics of the various lesions were defined. The limitations of diagnosis by chest x-ray were discussed. Nodular lesions in coal miners' lungs can be classified according to size and etiology and include micronodular CWP, macronodular CWP, silicotic nodule, progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), Caplan's lesion and infective granuloma. These are discussed. Pulmonary, vascular and cardiac abnormalities in CWP are also discussed. 26 figures.
