Title: Thermodynamic modeling of sensitization of AISI 304 stainless steels containing nitrogen

Journal Article · · Scr. Metall.; (United States)

In this paper the effect of nitrogen is incorporated into the thermodynamic model by means of the free energy interaction coefficients of nitrogen with chromium and carbon. Results of electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (EPR) tests and analytical electron microscopy (AEM) investigations in which the effects of nitrogen additions on the sensitization kinetics of AISI 304 stainless steels were investigated are also described. The calculations are compared with the experimental results, and used to propose a mechanism by which nitrogen additions affect the sensitization kinetics of AISI 304 stainless steels.
