Title: Well completion and stimulation. new frac fluid boosts efficiency, economy

The new Pur-gel fracturing service claims to cut gelling costs virtually in half in many cases, while providing an efficient frac job. The new gel, developed by Halliburton Services, was used on 4 Permian Basin wells in late 1982 and early 1983 with mixed results. It is reported the frac treatments went smoothly except for a screenout near the end of one treatment. Production results indicate slight improvements over conventional fracs in the area. Pur-gel is designed to treat wells with bottom-hole temperatures between 80 and 200 F. Short jobs in higher temperature wells can be treated with the system using standard cool-down techniques. Sand concentrations of 4 to 5 lb/gal of 20/40- and 10/20-mesh sand were reached with only half the gel concentration of regular frac fluid--one of the main purposes behind development of the product.
