Title: Evaluation of reclamation techniques at Little Kyger Creek in Gallia County, Ohio

An orphaned surface mine was reclaimed by means of earth moving and land grading approximately 25 years after mining ended. Following resoiling, seeding, and other restorative activities, post-reclamation site investigations were conducted for a 2-year period. The objective of the investigations was to monitor the effectiveness of different mine reclamation and sediment abatement techniques with specific reference to eight different resoiling areas. The resoiling areas were compared regarding their sediment retention, level of revegetation, maintenance of soil and vegetation chemistry, and cost. The areas resoiled with composted municipal wastes and paper pulp sludge achieved the highest overall ranking of quantitative factors excluding cost. However, the area resoiled with mine spoil and lime achieved a low soil loss, high ground cover, adequate vegetation yield, and low cost. Without the addition of fertilizer or lime, the soil and vegetation improvements at the mine spoil and lime area may deteriorate in the long term, but in the short term the area was judged to be the most successful, especially in terms of cost.
