DEMET-process for demetalization of fluid cracking catalysts
- ChemCat Corp., New Orleans, LA (USA)
The control of the activity and selectivity of FCCU catalyst is the key to optimum yields and maximum profitability. Currently, refineries employ two methods of control: the addition of fresh catalyst, and the addition of good quality equilibrium catalyst. Onsite FCCU catalyst demetalization, called DEMET, is a third alternative which has been developed by ARCO and the ChemCat Corporation. The DEMET concept is based on thirty years of research and development by ChemCat, ARCO and its predecessors. The DEMET procedures are used to remove active metal contaminants from the surface of equilibrium catalysts. This results in increased activity and improved selectivity of the catalyst. DEMET is applicable to all types of amorphous and zeolite catalysts. All catalysts do, however, not respond in the same way to the different types of DEMET procedures. In order to ensure optimum process conditions, each catalyst has to go through an extensive testing program before the start of a commercial scale operation. This presentation gives an example of the response of one equilibrium catalyst to the basic DEMET procedures and to modified versions of these procedures. The catalysts are evaluated by elemental analysis and by their cracking performance, as determined by the micro activity test (MAT).
