Coal gasification plants consist of a variety of interrelated subsystems involving coal preparation, gasification, gas cooling, gas cleaning, reagent production and for substitute natural gas, methanation and compression. High temperature, gas phase corrosion of metals in coal gasification plants occurs principally around the gasifier section of the plant. These corrosion problems arise from a unique combination of low oxygen and high sulfur pressure in the coal-derived gas exiting the gasifier. Similar conditions involving these corrodant species do not exist in current commercial chemical processes. Corrosion tests conducted to date in simulated coal gasification environments have demonstrated that many high-temperature alloys exhibit breakaway corrosion after extended exposure. This effect can occur in coal-derived gas at temperatures which the alloys exhibit excellent resistance in air. To date, the mechanisms of breakaway corrosion have not been established, but it is clear that sulfidation is involved in the process. In all coal gasificaiton plants, subsystems downstream of the gasifier involved in particulate removal and heat recovery must handle high velocity, dust-laden gases. These subsystems are, therefore, subject to a combination of erosion and corrosion. Erosion/corrosion is much more complex mechanistically compared to gas phase corrosion. Hence, the ongoing work has only begun to develop a data base on the performance of high temperature materials.
