Because of their high catalytic activity in decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, oxygen compounds of variable-valence metals are used as promoters in oxygen electrodes of fuel cells and in carbonaceous and other materials in treatment of wastewaters by oxidation with oxygen and peroxide. It has been shown that when hydrogen peroxide acts on solid oxides forming redox systems a change in the ratio of valence states of the metal occurs, leading to changes of chemical composition and activity of the catalysts. In particular, it has been shown that surface reactions involving hydrogen peroxide may lead to interconversion of PbO/sub 2/ and PbO and to considerable changes of the rate and mechanism of catalytic decomposition of H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ with changes in the composition of lead oxides and of the solution pH. In connection with the foregoing it is of interest to correlate catalytic activity, poisoning by organic substances, and the composition of PbO/sub 2/ and PbO in various media. Since lead monoxide exists in the yellow (PbO/sub v/) and red (PbO/sub r/) forms, while PbO/sub y/ may pass into Pb/sub 3/O/sub 4/ in presence of oxygen, decomposition of hydrogen peroxide on different forms of PbO is also of independent interest.
