Optimizing the by-product credit for distiller's grains in a fuel grade ethanol production process: the Kentucky experience
The whole stillage residue from Kentucky's distilleries is processed into Distiller's Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS). The sale of DDGS contributes 25% of the gross revenues of a fuel-grade ethanol plant which operates on a dry-mill basis. The related impact of corn-based feed products on current prices prompts, in this paper, an analysis of the outlook for DDGS supply and demand. As DDGS's value is related to its use as a protein supplement for ruminant animals, the cattle inventory cycles are worth watching. Poultry production is another positive market indicator. High-protein consuming animal units (HPCAU) production is also expected to increase. But international affairs are problematic. The price of DDGS will clearly fall to some degree in order to clear the market. But by relying on KEAC's program to educate consumers about DDGS the decline need not be precipitous or lengthy.
