Multiplet splitting (broadening) of the Ru L/sub II,tsIII/ edge white lines in the x-ray absorption near edge spectra of Ru(NH/sub 3/)/sub 6/Cl/sub 3/

It is shown that the linewidth broadening of the Ru L/sub II,tsIII/ edge white lines of Ru(NH/sub 3/)/sub 6/Cl/sub 3/ can be accounted for on the basis of final state multiplet splitting. The spread in the final state exchange energy has been calculated to be approx. 0.5 eV, which is in reasonable accord with the observed broadening.
