Static electrification induced by oil flow in power transformers

This work concerns the study of the static electrification phenomena on a real transformer equipped with an exceptional set of oil pumps allowing to carry out different tests with an oil flow reaching nearly five times the rated value. The transformer was filled with two kinds of oils, aged and new, in order to compare their Electrostatic Charging Tendency (E.C.T.). The static electrification levels are analyzed through the measurements of the leakage currents in unenergized and energized conditions, and by varying the temperature. Dielectric constraints and temperature are adjusted to the values inducing the maximum electrification level. The consequences of static electrification on the insulating reliability are analyzed basing on the electrification level and acoustically measured partial discharges.
