Title: Method for extracting acoustic velocities in a well borehole

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5285147

This patent describes in a sonde carrying an acoustic transmitter means for transmitting an acoustic pulse along a well borehole to an acoustic receiver wherein the transmitter and receiver are supported by the sonde in a well borehole, a method of improving the accuracy of an acoustic log. The method comprising the steps of: for a depth zone of interest, determining a first interval transit time measurement; for the same depth zone, determining a second and independent interval transit time; as a function of the first and second interval transit times, forming a difference signal; and evaluating the difference signal relative to a specified determinant the determinant being a function of the time period of a primary frequency acoustic pulse for an indication of acoustic pulse cycle skipping in recognition of onset of received acoustic pulses at the acoustic receiver while correcting for any detected cycle skips.
