By methods of NMR, ESR, and IR spectroscopy and of flash photolysis it was shown that donor-acceptor complexes are formed in the system 2,6-diphenyl-p-benzoquinone-PCl/sub 3/, a neutral radical is formed in flash photolysis, and the final reaction product is a phosphonium quinone-ylide. A mechanism is proposed for the reaction.
