Title: A study of D sub s meson production in 800 GeV p-p interactions

Miscellaneous ·
OSTI ID:5220015

The hadroproduction characteristics of D{sub s} mesons in 800 GeV P-P interactions were studied. The experiment was performed at Fermilab (E743) using LEBC (LExam Bubble Chamber) as the vertex detector and the Fermilab MPS (Multi-Particle Spectrometer) as a downstream detector for the secondary particles. The author reports the following results: (1) One unique D{sub s} event was observed with the following characteristics: x{sub f} = {minus}0.086, p{sub {perpendicular}} = 0.50 GeV, and decay time = 4.5 {times} 10{sup {minus}13} sec. (2) The most probable value and the 90% CL upper limit of {sigma} {center dot} Br (for all x{sub f}) are: ({sigma} {center dot} Br){sub most probable} = 0.52 {mu}b, ({sigma} {center dot} Br){sub 90%CL} < 2.7{mu}b, where BR is the branching ratio for Cabibbo favored three-pronged D{sub s} decays with no neutrals and {sigma} is the cross section for producing D{sub s} in 800 GeV pp interactions. (3) Assuming Br(D{sub s} {yields} {phi}{pi}) = 0.04, then the most probable value and the 90% CL upper limit of the cross section (for all x{sub f}) are: {sigma}{sub most probable} = 7.4 {mu}b, {sigma}{sub 90%CL} < 38 {mu}b. (4) The measurements are in general consistent with the expectations.
