While using scrapers and dozers for primary stripping is not a new concept, it has been applied more successfully and on a larger scale in southwest Indiana than anywhere else in the country. The orchestration between stripping and reclamation is a key factor in the success of the small Indiana producers. They have developed techniques that enable them not only to reclaim the land quickly, but to leave it as productive as when they started. This has allowed them to build up a good working relationship with the farmers in the area. Coal production in Indiana in 1982 was more than 30 million tons, making Indiana the ninth largest coal producing state in the nation. Indiana coal is part of the Illinois Basin coal formation, which runs from northern Illinois through the southwestern one-sixth of Indiana through western Kentucky. More than 50 coal seams are in the basin near the Indiana outcrop, but only 20 of the seams are thick enough and high enough in quality to be economically important.
