Effect of low river flows on the operation of Hanford production works resulting from operation of the proposed Priest Rapids Dam

There is under active study and design at this time a proposal to construct two power dams on the main stream of the Columbia River, immediately upstream from the Hanford production works. The lower (downstream) dam would be undertaken first with a proposal that the second or upstream dam be started two years later in schedule than the first. The Priest Rapids Dam would be located 6.5 miles upstream from the Midway Power Station, 13 miles upstream from the 100-B Hanford production area. The second or Wanapum Dam in this project would be 19 miles upstream from Priest Rapids site and would provide a 76 foot head with a normal operating pond elevation of 565 feet above sea level. Since the construction of the Hanford works the lowest flow, indicated from the daily records, is between35 and 36 thousand cubic feet per second. Any reduction in flow which might be imposed by operation of Priest Rapids Dam would actually and measurably adversely affect the most efficient operation of the the Hanford works.
