Oil from sand: an alternate energy source begins to pay off
Progress on the mining of 7000 acres of oil-impregnated sand by Syncrude Canada Ltd. in Alberta is reported. The project is on schedule presently, timewise and moneywise. The completion date is set for mid-1978. The cost is expected to be $2.4 billion, including an attendant utilities plant. A neighboring plant, the Great Canadian Oil Sands Ltd., has been operating since 1967, and not until 1976 did it show a profit. Syncrude's personnel are building a facility to produce 125,000 barrels of oil per day. At Cold Lake, Alberta, Imperial Oil produces experimentally 5000 barrels of bitumen per day through the in-situ process. Tar sand experimentation in the U. S. is taking place near Vernal, Utah, by ERDA's Laramie Energy Research Center; ignition will be in the combustion version of the in-situ process. The economics of tar sands is discussed. (MCW)
