We have introduced P-fluoro ylides into reaction with carbonyl compounds and CS/sub 2/. The work had the object of comparing the properties of P-fluoro ylides with the properties of previously studied P-chloro ylides (1, 10) and determining the influence of the electronegative fluorine atom on the reactions of P-fluoro ylides with carbonyl compounds. The 2-fluoro-1,2lambda/sup 5/-oxaphosphetanes are liquids that can be vacuum-distilled. Their structures were proved by means of mass and /sup 1/H, /sup 13/C, /sup 19/F, and /sup 31/ NMR spectra. The /sup 31/P chemical shifts of the compounds, which are doublets with a constant /sup 1/JPF of 800 Hz, are in the strong field of the NMR spectrum at -8 to -37 ppm, which corresponds to the 5-coordinate state of the phosphorus atom. Doublets with a similar constant are present in the /sup 19/F NMR spectra.
