Title: Use of a utility model combustion facility to determine the combustion characteristics of several coals and coal blends for potential use in a 625 MW boiler

Conference · · Coal Technol. (Houston); (United States)
OSTI ID:5079343

A combustion research program was developed jointly among Consolidation Coal Company (Consol), New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG), and Conoco Coal Research Division (CCRD) to test potential fuels for use in NYSEG's 625 MW Somerset boiler due to come on-line in October 1984. The tests were performed in the Conoco/Consol 1.5 MM Btu/hr combustor which is intended to simulate the configuration and operating conditions of a typical utility boiler. The combustion performance of five coals and one coal blend was determined at four specific operating conditions: volumetric heat release rates of 12,000 and 16,000 Btu/hr ft/sup 3/ with 2.5 and 3.2% O/sub 2/ measured in the flue gas at each heat release rate. Measurements made during each test included: flue gas species (O/sub 2/, CO/sub 2/, CO, NO /sub x/, SO/sub 2/), furnace gas exit temperature, firebox wall temperatures, and heat transfer rates through the slag panel and fouling probes. Samples included: fly ash, bottom ash, slagging and fouling deposits, and fuel (pulverized coal). Flame patterns during each test and deposits in the firebox and radiant sections after a run were video recorded for each fuel tested.
