In this paper, the distribution of local void fraction and heat-transfer coefficient of an air-water two-phase flow in helical coils are measured, and the effects of coil diameter and inclined angle on heat-transfer characteristics are investigated. When the coil is placed horizontally, there are fairly large differences in the void fraction distribution and the local heat-transfer coefficient between the upper and lower positions of the coil. The heat- transfer characteristics can be divided into three regions by the Lockhart-Martinelli parameter, 1/X{sub tt}, for coils of any diameter. Among these regions, the effects of angle of inclination are significant in the second and third regions. Finally, correlations between the average heat-transfer coefficient and 1/X{sub tt} are proposed.
