Title: Central receiver solar thermal power system, Phase 1. CDRL Item 5, thermal storage subsystem research experiment conceptual design report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5035867

The design, performance, and test plan for the thermal storage system for the pilot central receiver solar thermal power plant are presented. The 10 MWe Pilot Plant TSS employs sensible-heat storage using dual liquid and solid media for the heat storage in a single tank, with the thermocline principle applied to provide high-temperature, extractable energy independent of the total energy stored. The Thermal Storage Unit (TSU) is the principal element in the TSS. The TSU is packed with granite rock which stores thermal energy by the sensible heat principle between two operating limits, and minimizes the inventory of the heat transfer fluid. The unit operates between temperatures of 218 to 302/sup 0/C (425 to 575/sup 0/F) to store 195 MWth-hr (extractable) energy with charging and extraction rates up to 51.1 MWth and 29.7 MWth, respectively.
