  1. Sacramento Municipal Utility District, CA (United States)

Electric utilities have a central role to play in the rapid development of solar energy systems and techniques. The electric utility, especially a customer-owned utility, is not merely selling electrons. It is providing a vital energy service to customers concerned with comfort, security and value. The utility can best serve the needs of both the customer and the community at large by providing reliable access to cost-effective, non-polluting solar applications as part of its overall mix. In the process, the utility can act as the catalyst for accelerated development and deployment of solar energy systems. Utility solar applications range from demand-side management' (DSM) on the customer's side of the meter to distributed power applications' for utility system grid support to central solar power plants. In the form of conservation power and decentralized energy, solar can save customers money. This article describes the applications of solar energy being made by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District in the areas of solar domestic hot water systems, solar architecture, solar cooling, and solar thermal and photovoltaics.
