Strict european NO/sub x/ code brings SCR into the limelight
West German boiler owners must meet the world's most stringent NO/sub x/ emissions limits in only a few years. As a result, selective catalytic reduction is rapidly being integrated into the flue-gas train, providing experience and innovation that the US and the rest of the world will undoubtedly draw upon. New and existing boilers above 110 MW in West Germany must meet an NO/sub x/-emmisions limit of approximately 100 ppm (as NO/sub 2/)-for some dry-bottom units by as early as 1988, though progress in enforcing deadlines vary from state to state. This limit is result of an accord between federal and state environmental ministers reached in 1984. It followed the 1983 federal legislation that set tough new standards for SO/sub 2/ emissions but was lenient towards NO/sub x/. During the year in-between, concern increased about NO/sub x/ contributing to the severe West German forest damage.
