SO(10) Grand Unification symmetry breaking patterns which have SU(3) X SU(2) X U(1) X U(1) as an intermediate energy symmetry group are analyzed. The renormalization group prediction of this model for the weak mixing angle, sin/sup 2/theta/sub w/, is consistent with the experimental value of sin/sup 2/theta/sub w/ appropriate for the SU(2) X U(1) X U(1) extended electroweak model if the assumption that M/sub x/ = M/sub u/ is made. The experimental value of sin/sup 2/theta/sub w/ appropriate to this model is determined by fitting free parameters of the extended electroweak model to neutral current experimental data. The predictions from the renormalization group equations for the lifetime of the proton are, however, below present experimental upper limits. Predictions for the lifetime of the proton can be made above experimental upper limits if M/sub x/ is made a free parameter (i.e. if the assumption that M/sub x/ = M/sub u/ is dropped). Doing this, however, increases the predicted value of the sin/sup 2/theta/sub w/ to such an extent that it is no longer consistent with the experimental value. In order to see any of the above inconsistencies with experiment it is necessary to include the effects of the Higgs bosons in the renormalization group equations. The above results are shown for the case where the only Higgs used in the breakings at M' and M/sub w/ are those necessary to give mass to the fermions. Thus, the Grand Unified Theory based on SO(10) with SU(3) X SU(2) X U(1) X U(1) as an intermediate symmetry group and with simplest Higgs is ruled out by presently available neutral current data and by limits on the proton lifetime.
