The origin of diffraction peaks observed at low wave vector in many complex glasses remains a central issue in the understanding of amorphous structures. In this work a combination of neutron and x-ray diffraction is used to correlate the contributions from the different atom pair correlations to such peaks in rubidium germanate glasses. The information obtained is compared with structural data on glasses of similar compositions from other techniques, structures of corresponding crystalline compounds, and results from computer simulation of analogous systems. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}
