Industry studies real-time energy measurement of gas
With deregulation of natural gas comes an expansion in the number of gas marketers as well as concerns about gas quality and billing. The marketing changes resulting from open access to the gas system, coupled with the requirement that transportation contracts be based on therm content, has heightened the need for timely, accurate gas transaction measurement. Currently, GRI and its partners are developing a gas energy content meter--a high-precision microcalorimeter designed to be installed and operated in a wide range of field-operating conditions. The important issue here is that the technology for low-cost measurement of the Btu content of natural gas presents opportunities and choices that never have been practical before. There are some significant benefits achievable through Real-Time Energy Measurement that require only minimal change in the business practices of local distribution companies. The benefits are discussed and the gas meter is described.
