The water-in-oil type emulsion polymerization process as described in British Patent 841,l27 is modified in that the hydrophilic water-soluble unsaturated monomer is directly dispersed in the inert organic liquid, either in the absence of water or in the presence of small amounts of water. A suitable emulsifying agent is used in the proportion 0.1 to 10 wt%, and free radical- yielding agents or radiation may be used to cause the polymerization. (D.L.C.)
