The reaction of niobium with xylenol orange was studied. lt is shown that oxalic acid strongly furthers the formatton of a colored complex of niobium with XO. It is supposed that oxalic acid causes the decomposition of polyions of niobium, after which the monometric ions form a complex with XO. Heating considerably accelerates this process. The optimal reaction conditions are pH 2; Nb: H/sub 2/C/sub 2/ O/sub 4/ ratio 1:5. A large excess of oxalic acid causes a certain attenuation of the color. The absorption spectra indicate the direct formation of a complex with lambda = 530 mu mu and a molar coefficient of absorption E approximately 30000. (auth)
