A study was made on the cis-trans reactions during irradiation with x ray or radioactive compound, and the quantities of fumaric acid transformed with and without irradiation were compared. The quantities of fumaric acid produced were found to increase when maleic acid solution was irradiated with the sddition of bromine water as catalyst. However, without bromine water, the isomerization rate of maleic acid into fumaric acid decreased when the time of irradiation with x ray was prolonged. Irradiation with radioactive compound was conducted by spreading uranyl or thorium compound on a layer of agar gel inside the cover of a Petri dish and placing the sample solution in the dish itself.
