It was shown previously that atomic silver, which is responsible for the image-development centers in a nuclear emulsion, is dissolved out of the emulsion by dilute acids. The density of ionization along the track of a fast, charged particle in the emulsion was taken as a parameter to determine the effect of the acid treatment on the sensitization image and on the latent image. Acid-treated sampies of emulsion and control samples of emulsion, which had no backing and were 400 mu thick were irradiated with gamma quanta which form fast electrons in the emulsion. The ionization density was found to be 25 spots per 100 mu in the control samples, and in the samples treated with a solution of pH 3 to 7. The density falls to 18 spots per 100 mu for an acidtreating solution with a pH of 1. In sensitizing the emulsion with gold, about 70% of the centers become resistant to the effect of acid. The atomic silver centers are thought to be the cause for the occurrence of photographic fog. Samples of emulsions were also irradiated with electrons, 8.6 Bev protons, and mu mesons from cosmic radiation. The ionization density fell from 25 spots per 100 mu for the control emulsion to 10 spots per 100 mu for the emulsion treated with an acid solution at a pH of 1. The results show that the image-development centers are associated with atomic silver which can be completely dissolved by acid. Most of the sensitization centers are protected by the previous chemical treatment, and are not dissolved by acid. (TTT)
