The extraction of a Pu(IV) compound with N-benzoylphenylhydroxyiamine (BPHA) from nitric, hydrochloric, and sulfuric acid solutions was studied. It was shown that Pu is readily extracted with a 0.4 M reagent solution in chloroform from 1 to 6 M nitric acid solutions after a short-time contact of the organic and aqueous phases. Plutonium is sparingly extracted from hydrochloric and sulfuric acid solutions that was used for its back-extraction with hydrochloric and sulfuric acids. A study was made of the effect of the BPHA concentration, duration of the phase contact, and of certain foreign ions on Pu extraction from nitric acid solutions. The extraction of U(VI), Am, Np(V), and Np(IV), and fission products was studied under the optimum conditions for Pu separation. It was found that practically no extraction of U, Am, Np(V), and of the major part of the fission products takes place under the same conditions. Of the fission products (a year old) only Zr and Nb are extracted. A method was developed for the separation of Pu from U and the fission products. After the extraction with a 0.4 M BPHA solution from 3 M nitric acid Pu is back-extracted with sulfuric acid; by this it is separated from Zr and Nb and is determined radiometrically. The method may be used for separation of pairs: Pu-U and Pu--Am. (auth)
