HANDLING DEVICE
In order to handle fuel elements in vertical reactor channels, a gripping device is lowered into the channel to grip the handling head of a fuel element. The gripping device comprises two gripping elements pivotally mounted in the lower part of the main body of the device and acting as tongs on the handling head of the fuel element. The movement of the gripping elements is controlled by the axial displacement of a rod axially slidable within the main body. This displacement is performed due to an electrical coilwinding acting on the rod against the action of a spring. Means are provided to lock the rod automatically in each of its end positions, as there is a tension between the said main body and the cable on which the device is suspended, so that when the rod comes to rest on the handling head, this tension disappears, the rod is unlocked and the gripping elements close on the handling head.
