Formation of fast particles carrying multiple charges by the splitting of light nuclei by high-energy protons is of great interest for the theory of direct interactions, therefore, the angular distribution and the energy spectra of /sub 3/Li/sup 8/ fragments, emitted at various angles with respect to the incident protons were investigated for the case involving the splitting of the / sub 6/C/sup 12/ nucleus. Thin polystyrene and polyethylene films were exposed in a vacuum chamber to a 10/sup 13/ cm/sup -2/ proton flux in the extracted beam of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Studies phasotron, using a proton energy of 660 Mev. The Li/sup 8/ fragments were recorded by means of a low-sensitivity nuclear emulsion in the angular range from 20 to 160 deg . Results revealed the formation of T-shaped tracks which in principle could be formed by clei at 20, 47, 90, and 137 deg . They were due mostly to /sub 3/Li/sup 8/ and to a slight degree to /sub 3/Li/sup 9/, the i sobar /sub 5/B/sup 8/ was absent. This indicated a substantially asymmetric structure of /sub 6/C/sup 12/ in relation with the mirror symmetry of the /sub 5/B/sup 8/ and /sub 3/Li/sup 8/ cluster. While this supports the assump tion that the incident protons split the clusters quasi-elastically, it is contradicted by the energy measurements as a function of the angle of observation and the energy of the incident particles. It was concluded that the softest portion of the /sub 3/Li/sup 8/ spectrum is due to the formation by an (n,2n) reaction of an intermediate /sub 4/Be/sup 9/ particle and to the decay of the residual nucleus.
