THE FLUORINATION OF URANIUM SULFATE WITH CHLORINE TRIFLUORIDE (in Russian)
A 10-g sample of U(SO/sub 4/)/sub 2/ was fluorirated with gaseous ClF/ sub 3/ for 1 hour in a horizontal nickel reactor at temperatures of 18, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 deg C. The composition of the solid residue was determined by chemical and x-ray analyses. The UF/sub 6/ yield was determined by freezing out the volatile components in a copper or quartz trap. The data show that U(SO/ sub 4/)/sub 2/ is converted to UO/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ with incre asing temperature. The content of UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/ in the solid residue also increases with the temperature. The yield of UF/sub 6/ is 75.60% at 200 deg , 81.30% at 250 deg , and 90.74% at 300 deg C. Uranium hexafluoride is probably formed as a result of the fluorination of UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/. The fluorination of U(SO/sub 4/)/sub 2/ by Cl F/sub 3/ can be represented as follows: (a) 3U(SO/sub 4/)/sub 2//sup +/ 2ClF/sub 3/ yields 3UO/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ + 3SO/sub 2/F/sub 2/ + Cl/sub 2/; (b) 3UO/ sub 2/SO/sub 4/ + 8ClF/sub 3/ yields 3UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/ + 3SO/sub 2/F/sub 2/ + 4C1/sub 2/ + 60F/sub 2/; (c) 3UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/ + 8ClF/sub 3/ yields 3UF/sub 6/ + 4Cl/sub 2/ + 60F/sub 2/. The over-all reaction is: 3U(SO/sub 4/)/sub 2/ + 18ClF/sub 3/ yields 3UF/sub 6/ + 6SO/sub 2/F/sub 2/ + 9Cl/sub 2/ + 6OF/sub 2/. (TTT)
