This is a fundamental study of the torsion-rotation energy level manifold of the ground vibrational state of CH{sub 3}{sup 18}OH. The spectra, ranging from 15-470 cm{sup -1} with a resolution of 0.002 cm{sup -1}, have been recorded at the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics of the National Research Council in Ottawa and the Physical Chemistry Institute of Justus-Liebig-Universitaet, Giessen. Both the {open_quotes}Ritz{close_quotes} global fitting program and spreadsheet tables for individual subbands have been used in this study. More than 7,000 lines and 1,800 levels of A torsional symmetry, and 10,000 lines and 2,500 levels of E symmetry have so far been assigned and evaluated. As well, interactions involving {Delta}K = 1, {Delta}K = 2 and {Delta}K = 4 perturbations have been observed and analyzed. This study is helpful in providing a comprehensive data set with which to test models for the theoretical analysis of asymmetric top molecules with internal rotation. It has also been very useful in supplying solid ground-state combination differences required for the investigation of excited vibrational states, and the ground-state links needed to form closed combination loops in the assignment of optically-pumped FIR laser emission.
