Variation of the vapor volumetric fraction during flow and power transients

An exact solution has been obtained for the variation of the vapor volumetric (void) fraction during exponential flow and power transients using the method of characteristics. The void propagation'' equation, as derived by Zuber and Staub was used and extended to the rnore general case of non-saturated inlet conditions. Transient void fraction measurements made with a capacitance- type void gage show good agreement with the theory, indicating that the simplifying assumptions made in the analysis are valid over a fairly wide range of void fractions.
