New offshore coatings extend pipe longevity
Historically, protective coatings for pipelines have been developed for land use, but not for the fresh and salt water environments required by the offshore industry. Because the industry has not developed international corrosion-protection standards for offshore pipelines, and because a variety of coatings are available, pipeline manufacturers currently need only to meet their customers` specifications. Today, many of the available coatings do not provide maximum protection when pipes are subjected to the combined effects of highly corrosive salt water and thousands of pounds of water pressure. Today, polyethylene (PE)-based coating systems are being manufactured for the toughest applications, such as offshore pipelines. Two types of these hot-applied, multi-layered systems include: (1) a coating based on composites which use PE layers in combination with elastomeric adhesives; (2) an epoxy primer plus multiple PE layers. The layers in both types of systems are fused together to form an impermeable coating which becomes one layer bonded completely to the pipe.
