Growth pattern and $sup 13$C/$sup 12$C isotope fractionation of Cyanidium caldarium and hot spring algal mats
A study was undertaken with the thermophilic green alga Cyanidium caldarium, x,high grows optimally at low pH and high concentrations of CO/sub 2/. Carbon-isotope fractionation was not found to be a simple linear function of temperature. Maximum enrichmcnt of /sup 12/C in cellular material occurred under optimum growth conditions (at approximately pH 2 and at temperatures between 40 and 50 deg C in a CO/sub 2/ atmosphere). A maximum measured fractionation of -- 24 0/00 may account for low values ( delta /sup 13/C < -30 0/00/sup PDB/ ) in Precambrian kerogen presumably derived from algal mats. (auth) 16O91 A Chlamydomonas marine strain was cultured in the presence of /sup 90/Sr and /sup 90/Y. No difference in growth rhythm was noticed when 1 m mu C /sup 90/Sr was employed and an uptake maximum was observed on the 6th or 7th day, at which point the /sup 90/Sr-/sup 90/Y ratio (in no. o f atoms) was 30: 1. Individual cell uptake of /sup 90/Sr was around 128 l0/sup -9/ from the 8th day. Comparison of the amount of /sup 90/Sr present in the algae (dry weight) and in an equivalent amount of earth showed a concentration factor of about 1600. (auth)
