Reconstruction of n-particle total cross sections from n-prong total cross sections in pp collisions
By using strong smoothness requirements total n-particle cross sections were constructed from observed n-prong total cross sections from 4 to 303 GeV/c in pp collisions. Weights of the final multiparticle states are assumed to be given by statistical weights multiplied by a Gaussian. The reconstructed values for various special channels are satisfactory, and the agreement with measured average numbers of pi /sup +/, pi /sup o/ and pi /sup -/ is very g ood. The same is true for the average number of pi /sup o/ for given prong numbers. The average has an energy dependence very close to that of . The energy dependence of the lowest multiplicities shows no sign of leveling off thus indicating absence of diffraction dissociation. The ratio /D is very close to two in the whole energy range. The Koba -Nielsen -Olesen scaling holds within the errors from 10 to 303 GeV/c. (auth)
