Title: Stator structure for superconducting ac generator

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4315101

Reference is made to ac generators having rotor windings of superconducting material and stator windings of nonsuperconducting material. With such an arrangement there is no need for a magnetic core in either the stator or the rotor. In conventional generators it is common practice to locate the stator windings in slots in the stator core, but with superconducting generators that do not have a magnetic core it is necessary to provide an alternative form of stator construction to support the stator winding. In the arrangement described conductors forming the stator winding are supported within an insulating structure formed of successive layers of material wrapped one on top of the other over a cylindrical former. The former is preferably of moulded reinforced symthetic resin on which the conductors are laid and to which they are fastened by strips of resin-impregnated fabric. The layers of the support structure preferably consist alternately of helically wound strip and helically wound tubing, the latter being of square or rectangular cross section, the layers of strip extending beyond the ends of the layers of tubing and being joined together and secured to end support members of the stator. When the stator winding is multi-layer layers of resin-impregnated glass fiber sheets are preferably interposed between the layers of winding. (UK)
