Properties and performance of a multiwire proportional chamber (in German)
Thesis. The properties and performance of a multiwire proportional chamber and the corresponding calculations are discussed in detail. The following topics are discussed: layout of the chamber, variation of field intensity and degree of homogeneity as a function of chamber geometry, gas magnification as a function of the voltage applied and chamber geometry within the proportional band and within the range of limited proportionality, distribution of pulse amplitude and the influence of the collimation of the source (pulse rise time, counting time, time-dependent resolution, influence of the type of gas used and R/sub C/ unit, integrating and differentiating external wiring of the chamber, optimization of the wiring, interference pulses due to capacitive disturbances and influence), detector characteristics (as a function of primary ionization and geometmy, reproducibility, spatial resolution), detection of thermal and subthermal neutrons (sensitivity, discriminating power, particle localization), as well as detection of x-rays and low-energy gamma radiation.
