The accelerator production of tritium (APT) project involves the design of an accelerator and target/blanket system to produce tritium. Operating at an overall availability of 75%, the APT plant capacity is 3 kg of tritium per year. The design goals are to meet the tritium production requirements with a robust design that provides adequate safety and thermal margins, protects the public, and uses existing technology to the extent possible. The target/blanket uses a replaceable module design, incorporating a window and a centrally located tungsten neutron source module surrounded by blanket and reflector modules. All modules reside in a cavity maintained at a rough vacuum. The window module, a double-wall Inconel structure, is the interface between the accelerator and cavity. The expanded high-energy beam passes through the window into the target/blanket cavity, which operates in a controlled atmosphere. The heat deposited in the window structure is removed by a low-pressure light-water coolant.
