The cis-trans isomerization of maleic acid to fumaric acid, catalyzed by aqueous potassium thiocyanate. was investigated and found to be consistent with Streitwieser"s analysis of the secondary alpha -deuterium isotope effect Maleic acid with maleic acid-2: 3-d/sub 2/ exhibited an inverse isotope effect, kH/kD= 0.885 plus or minus 0.012 at 80 deg C. Carbon 2 or 3, having sp/sup 2/- hybridization in the initial state (C-H out-ofplane bending frequency: approximately 700 cm/sup -1/), was partially converted to an sp/sup 3/- tetrahedral carbon in the transition state.
