Title: MUON REACTIONS IN LIQUID HYDROGEN AND LIQUID DEUTERIUM

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D

The reactions of muons in liquid hydrogen containing a low concentration of deuterium, p mu + d yields d mu + p yields (d mu p)+ yields He/sup 3/ + mu /sup -/(a) or (He/sup 3/ mu )/sup +/ + gamma (b), and in liquid deute rium containing a low concentration of hydrogen, d mu + p yields (d mu p)/sup +/ yields He/sup 3/ + mu /sup -/(c) or (He/sup 3/ mu )/sup +/ + gamma (d), and d mu + d yields (d mmd)+ yields He/sup 3/ + n + mu /sup -/(e) or p + t + mu / sup -/(f), were investigated using the Chicago 9-in. bubble chamber. Using previously determined values for the formation and fusion rates of the (d mu p)/ sup +/ ion in hydrogen in conjunction with a theoretical determination of the population of the various hyperfine levels in the (d mu p)/sup +/ ion, reaction (a) is found to occur in (1 plus or minus plus or minus 1. plus or minus )% of all (d mu p)/sup +/ fusion reactions. The formation rate of the (d mu d)/sup +/ ion in liquid deuterium is found to be lambda /sub dd/ = (3.6 plus or minus 1.3) x 10/sup 5/ sec/sup -1/. The fusion rate of the (d mu d)/sup +/ is lambda / sub df/= (2.5 plus or minus 0.04 ) x 10/sup 5/ sec/sup -1/, and the fraction of muons which, having catalyzed reaction (e), are subsequently bound in a (He/sup 3/ mu )/sup +/ muonic ion is (0.31 plus or minus 0.0034). The rate of deexcitation to the lower hyperfine level of the d mu muonic atom via the reaction d mu (3/2) + d yields d + d mu (1/2) was investigated and found to he (7.9 plus or minus 2.8) x 10/sup 5/ sec/sup -1/ < lambda (a//sup -1//) < (1.3 plus or minus plus or minus 0.48) x 0/sup 6/ sec/sup -1/. The interference of reactions (c), (d), (e), and (f) in the investigation of the spin-independent capture reaction mu /sup -/ + d yields n + n + nu is discussed. (auth)
