STUDY OF THE PROPERTIES OF SOME GRAFT COPOLYMERS. I. PREPARATION OF SAMPLES. STUDY OF SOLUBILITY AND SWELLING (in French)
Graft copolymers having incompatible constituents were prepared radiochemically. A study of their properties has led to the following results. The solubility of the polystyrene- polyacrylonitrile graft copolymer in solventprecipitant media depends on the character of the precipitant used. By grouping the character of the precipitants according to the value of internal energy density delta , it is ssen that in the case of precipitants having delta greater than that of polyacrylonitrile, the graft copolymers are more soluble than the two constituent homopolymers. When the value of delta of the precipitant is between that of the two constituent polymers, the solubility of the graft copolymers is intermediate between that of the two homopolymers. If the value of delta of the precipitant is much smaller than the delta of the polystyrene, the graft copolymers containing 34 and 58% polystyrene are less soluble than the two constituent homopolymers. The copolymer containing 88% polystyrene has the same solubility as polystyrene. Swelling of the polyethylene- polyacrylonitrile in xylene at 50 deg has a maximum for the copolymer containing 7% acrylonitrile. This effect seems due to a decrease of the crystallinity of the polyethylene during grafting, which results in an easier penetration of the copolymer by the solvent. At 100 deg , pure polyethylene is completely soluble in xylene. Grafting of acrylonitrile progressively decreases this solubility. (tr-auth)
