IRON COATINGS AND METHOD OF APPLYING
Iron coatings on uranium are superior to other coatings and may be prepared by etching the uranium and electroplating in a conventional iron electroplating bath containing, e.g., ferrous ammonium sulfate. The final coatings may have a thicknsss of from 1.5 x 10/sup -5/ to 10/sup -3/ in. and may be used as barrier coatings over which various protective coatings can be applied, e.g., lead, zinc, tin, and cadmium, because the iron prevents uranium from diffusing into these metals. The coatings are especially valuable for effecting aluminum~ alloy coatings of uranium, since aluminum~ resets with uranium to form brittle and undesirable alloys. Two examples of iron coating of uranium rods followed by aluminum coating are given. (D.L.C.)
